1) Laser Printers: Laser printers create letters of text by projecting a beam of light onto an electrically charged drum, which is then turned into an image. The light from the laser is absorbed by the toner powder in the cartridge, which is then transferred to paper. This type of printer is ideal for printing large amounts of text. Laser printers are very fast, but can be expensive to operate.

2) Inkjet Printers: An inkjet printer uses tiny ink cartridges to print photos, letters, and drawings. Inkjet printers that also print in color are called multi-function printers (MFPs). They use both ink and toner cartridges, combining functions into one machine -- such as a scanner or copy machine. Prices range from $99-$1000+.

Manufacturers of desktops and laptops have switched to mobile printing, which is proving to be a hit with the public. A growing number of printer manufacturers have begun releasing devices that allow people's phones and tablets to connect wirelessly in order to print documents or take pictures from their devices.".

There are over 20 different types of printers, each one specialized for a different type of output like photo printing, manual ink printing, or laser-based technologies. The most common printers these days use inkjet technology; although there is also an increasing amount of digital laser-printing technology on the market as well. There are two main types: dye-based and piezoelectric inks. Dye-based inks are cheaper and can be used for a whole host of things, including printing photographs, printing brochures, and printing documents. Piezoelectric inks are about 15% more expensive but they have the added benefit of being able to print a wider range of colors as well as being able to print on heavier items like cardboard.

Let's start with the printers themselves (desktop and laptop) which use inkjet technology, along with an ever increasing number of mobile phones (smartphones and tablets) which also use inkjet technology. The printers started out as having both color and black cartridges; but due to the increased popularity of laser printers most newer printers only have black cartridges. Laser printers can print up to 1500 pages (though they don't continuously print) and they're more expensive than inkjet printers. Besides the cost, inkjet printers do have one other major advantage over laser printers, since the printer head doesn't move during printing, the cartridges are easy to replace.

Printers for Apple computers use a special cable that connects to the computer; and vice versa for Macintosh computers. Printers used with Windows computers connect via USB or ethernet cables. The most common type of printer available is an inkjet printer that prints at speeds of up to 20 pages per minute and will output documents in portrait or landscape mode as well as produce products like brochures, postcards or envelopes.
